The collection includes a letter, January 8, 1865, from Lt. Fenwick Y. Hedley, of the 32nd Illinois, thanking Sheffield for the kind treatment aboard the ship. A second letter January 9, 1865, signed by all officers of the 32nd who had traveled on the Winona, commending all of the Naval crew for their kindness, generosity and gentlemanly behavior. There is correspondence between Oakleaf and Sheffield, of Stonington, Conn., regarding the two documents and the incident discussed. Also correspondence between Oakleaf and Charles H. Partridge of the GAR re: surviving members of the 32nd Ill. Correspondence between Oakleaf and Hardin T. Richardson, who had been a Captain in the 32nd Ill.

Lawyer in Moline, Illinois who maintained collections of Abraham Lincoln and Illinois history material. In 1908 he received from his friend, William F. Carlson, in Chicago, two letters pertaining to the 32nd Illinois Infantry and its passage on the U.S.S. Winona from Savannah, Georgia to Beaufort, S.C. in January 1865.
